Letter from Philip Showalter Hench to Foster Kennedy, April 16, 1946

April 16, 1946
Dr. Foster Kennedy
410 East 57th Street
New York 22, N. Y.
My dear Doctor Kennedy:

Thank you so much for your nice letter of April 9. I certainly
would like to spend an hour with you over our mutual hobby, the yellow
fever story. Where in the world did you get the original contract
between Walter Reed and Nicanor Fernandez? My recollection was that
it was in the Surgeon General's Office for a while. I will tell you
the interesting story of how one of these contracts disappeared and
reappeared about twenty years later. I have collected many interesting
items of the yellow fever episode and indeed have many of the original
fever charts, letters of Reed, Lazear and others.

I agree with you that Finlay has not received as much credit
in this country as he deserves but the Americans have certainly not
received the credit they deserve in Cuba. I have visited there many
times and the misunderstanding is painful. I hope by my own writings
to do what I can to heal the wounds.

I expect to be in New York May 24 and 25 and then will go to
the Atlantic City meetings. Having been in the Army for almost four
years I haven't had an opportunity of attending a meeting of the
Association of American Physicians since I was elected.

Sincerely,

P. S. Hench, M. D.
