 | Hygiene. I. Mention the principal places in which specific Yellow Fever prevails as an Endemic, and the conditions necessary for its propoga- tion beyond these localities. Among the principal places, in which yellow fever prevails as an Endemic disease, may be mentioned Havana, Denievara (British Gui [a] na) New Orleans, etc- These are among the principal towns which I call to mind, but the disease is Endemic throughout the Island of Cuba, St. Dowings, Hayti, etc.- also along the Coast of Peru in South America. The conditions necessary for its propogation- Under this head it may be stated that the disease may be carried from these localities by land & by water- Either by germs clinging to clothing or in cargo of ship- or by a person who is is at the time sick of the disease being trans- ported to a heal non-infected [locality] - Even under these circumstances, that the disease may be propagated in the next locality, there must be a warm temperature, combined with mois- |
 | ture- Sanitarians also consider that the condit- ion of a city, as to filth & drainage, has a marked effect on the spread of the disease- Instance the scarcity of the disease in New Orleans, under military Law- It might be stated, in this connection, that the disease is not considered as of a con- tagious nature, except by a few., & that there must [be] certain conditions in [a] locality (which I have above referred to) in order that the disease should spread- The disease does not often prevail beyond 40° North. A cold snap generally check its course. II State your views with regard to the value of quarantine regulations to prevent its introductions into places beyond the yellow fever zone. It is generally held that quaran- tine regulations are of very great value to prevent the introduction of the disease; that by thorough disinfection of all infected clothing & the strict quarantine of patients the introduction of yellow fever may be |
