    Biography.

    I was born in Glou-
cester County, Va on the 13th day of Septem-
ber, 1851 & have resided in the State of Va going
all of my life
to within 6 years past. During
my residence in that state, I enjoyed the
usual opportunities of school education.
I entered what may be designated as the [a]
common school at the age of 6, and was
in [regular] attendance on such school, at dif-
ferent places in the state, till about the
age of 13. At this time, I entered a "High
School" in the town of Charlottesville, Va,
where I pursued more advanced studies,
such as Latin, Greek, Mathematics, etc.
This course was somewhat preparatory
to entering the University of Va, situated
in the same town. At the Accordingly
at the age of 16, I entered entered as a
student at the University of Va & during

 
the following session (1867-8) was a member
of the Senior Latin & Greek classes. I did
not graduate in either branch of my studies.
At the commencement of the following ses-
sion, Octr 1st, 1868, I began the study of med-
icine, at this University & was graduated,
July 1st, 1869. During the following Septr
I came to the City of New York & matric-
ulated as a student of Medicine at the
Bellevue Hospl Medical College. During
my attendance on lectures, at this college,
in December 1869, I stood a competitive
examination, for the position of Ass't. Physi-
cian, Infants Hospl, Randall's Island, N.Y.
City, and was appointed as such, January 1st
1870. This position I held till April
1st 1871. Was there appointed Ass't. Physi-
cian, King's Co. Hospl, Flatbush, L. Island,
& remained till August 1st 1871, at which
time I resigned, & having stood a comp pet
petitive examn, was appointed, Resident
Surgeon, Brooklyn City Hospl, Brooklyn,
N. York, which position I retained till
August 1st, 1872. At this time I was
 
appointed, District Physician, under the Dep't. of Public Charity
of New Y., a Attending Physician, Eastern Dispensary, New York,
which positions I retained till March 1st 1873.

    In June 1873, I was appointed Ass't. Sanitary Insptr
Brooklyn Board of Health, and remain as such at
present. I would respectfully state that during
my service as "Resident Surgeon," Brooklyn City Hospl
I had the opportunity of daily observing & treating
cases of Acute Surgery, & also many Medical Cases.
