Letter from Walter Reed to L. O. Howard, January 13, 1900 [1901] |
 | Columbia Barracks, Quemados, Cuba, January 13, 1900. [?] DIVISION OF ENYOMOLOGY, JAN 17, 1901 ANSWERED BY LETTER. Should be 1901 In dating stamp. Dear Mr Howard: I am in receipt of yours of January 5th, and thank you very much for the card containing Dr Wolfert's suggestion. I turned the card over to the Chief Surgeon, yesterday. I enclose a copy of the order relating to protection against mos- quitoes. Ofcourse, you have already heard from Dr Stern- berg of our complete suc- cess in repeating our former observations. |
 | The mosquito theory of [for] the propagation of yellow fever is no longer a theory, but a well established fact. Isn't it enough to make a fellow feel happy? Anopheles and Culex are a gay old pair! What havoc they have wrought on our species during the last three centuries! But with "Howard and Kerosene", we are going to knock them out! With best wishes, Sincerely, yours, Walter Reed. |
 | Major J. R. Kean, Surgeon, U.S.A. was the Acting Chief Surgeon of the Division of Cuba, at the time this order was published, & it was he who drew it up & rec- ommended it to Gen. Wood. He should have credit for it. W. R. |
